Microbial Electrolysis Desalination Cells in Sustainable Water and Energy: Assessing Platinum and Nickel Foam Cathodes and Reverse Osmosis Simulation
Tahereh Jafary
Abstract: Microbial electrolysis desalination cells play a crucial role in sustainable water and energy management. This presentation examines the performance of platinum and nickel foam cathodes and simulates how they might integrate with reverse osmosis (RO) systems. Researchers developed the microbial integrated cell (MIC), a bioelectrochemical system that combines microbial electrolysis and desalination for renewable energy production and water purification. The study assessed the efficiency of nickel foam and platinum/carbon cloth cathodes for hydrogen production and desalination. Results showed that nickel foam achieved a 91% desalination efficiency, closely following platinum/carbon cloth's 99%. Hydrogen generation rates were 0.96 m³H₂/m³/day for platinum/carbon cloth and 0.72 m³H₂/m³/day for nickel foam. Although the nickel foam's performance was slightly lower, its cost benefits suggest that it might be more feasible for large-scale applications. The research also explored integrating the MIC with RO systems to improve sustainability. Simulations indicated that MIC-RO integration could significantly reduce energy consumption and decrease the concentration of brine discharged into the sea, enhancing the efficiency and environmental impact of desalination plants. Overall, this study paves the way for adopting these green technologies, optimizing efficiency and environmental benefits for practical use.
